Blair Reviews - MXPW's "Florida J Cup" in Avon Park, Florida, April 7, 2007
I'm the Emperor of Ellipses
This was a show I was looking forward to, as it featured 8 of the best junior heavyweights in the state of Florida; of course, some people didn't feel the same way, and instead raised a huge stink over how Chasyn Rance wasn't booked for the tournament (he was at a CCW show instead) and how, really, any junior heavyweight tournament in Florida is a fraud if it doesn't have Chasyn in it due to how he's the best junior heavyweight in the state and all that? oh boy would I like to go more in depth on it, but I'll just sum it up by saying that not only are they making themselves look like assclowns for being such pissy little crybabies who need a diaper change, but they are making CHASYN bad due to how it appears as if he has to have his friends campaign for him to appear on shows, and he also throws a shitfit when he's not booked on a certain show?
Anyway? I arrived at the show and it turned out that for various reasons (most of which I can't really talk about on here, but it wasn't MXPW's fault)* the attendance at this event was only around 100 (maybe a little more than that), which was far below the more than 300 they had for the October show I saw and the January attendance was apparently around the same amount. It's an unfortunate break for MXPW, but then again I don't know the whole story or have heard both sides of it? at least the crowd was, more often than not, amped up for the show and was into it, so that made up somewhat for the low attendance.
* Oh wait, I see that MXPW talked about the main reason online, so I might as well state it myself? according to them, rival fed CCW frequently tore down the signs they had put up at the National Guard Armory due in part to them having a show in Sebring in early May.
We start at around 8:05 instead of 7:30 due to the crowd and all that. The ring announcer was SCW personality Michael Cade instead of that police chief of Sebring who was the announcer in October and he (the police chief) did a horrible job; I know that was done as a compromise and all that, but I'm glad Cade was the announcer instead for this event.
We started off with all 8 competitors coming out as they were introduced to the crowd. We also saw the J Cup trophy, and I don't mean to flog and then mutilate a dead horse here but the trophy was much larger than the YAPRO Cup trophy. Also, all 8 guys happen to have on the official Florida J Cup shirts; oh would I love to make a wisecrack about that but I'd better not, as I've already stirred enough shit up for one review?
1. Craig Classic defeated Nooie Lee. I'll say that this was a good opener. It wasn't really "flashy", per se, but that was fine. Things went back and forth before Classic won cleanly by reversing a pin attempt.
2. Jerrelle Clark defeated Johnny Vandal. Jerrelle had new long tights that were purple and black. He controlled the majority of this contest and won with what some people call "The Teabag Driver" (due to how Jerrelle's junk ends up in his opponent's face before he does the move; don't ask) for the victory; I thought it was an entertaining bout, although there was a moment where a move was slightly flubbed and Jerrelle landed right on his neck; thankfully, after a few seconds he was fine.
3. Jaison Moore defeated Chris Jones. I'll say that this was fine, although at times it was disjointed. Both guys came out as fan favorites (even though Chris Jones once again came out to that damned Fergalicious song!) but throughout the bout, the spastic acting Jones started to do a few heel moves, such as poking the eyes and whatnot. Jaison won with the Kryptonite Krunch (for you WWE fans, Finlay's Celtic Cross); after that, he helped Chris to his feet; to return the favor, Jones delivered a low blow to Moore, much to the crowd's disgust.
4. Aaron Epic defeated Austin Amadeus. Austin was hated by the crowd right away due to his cocky demeanor while Epic was loved due to how his hometown is nearby Sebring. I'll say this was pretty good. It wasn't long before they brawled along ringside-both guys ending up getting thrown into the steel barricade before Epic was backdropped into the steel chairs. From there Austin targeted the back of Aaron. Things went back and forth from there before Epic got the victory.
5a. In a "young lions" match (continuing the faux puroresu theme of the show), Shayne Swyft (who came out to the Beverly Hills 90210 theme song) and Nick Fame (who came out to the Kansas classic "Carry On Wayward Son") fought to a no contest after about 90 seconds after Bruce Santee came out and attacked both guys. This was done because Bruce stated that his schedule opponent for the show, MXPW Champion The Warlord was not there* and claimed that was due to MXPW pulling a conspiracy against him, so he would instead face both Swyft and Fame.
? Yeah that was disappointing as he was by far the biggest name for the "casual" fans there.
5b. Bruce Santee (w/ Amy Love) defeated Shayne Swyft and Nick Fame in an handicap match. It was mainly a squash, although the final minute or two had the two guys getting offense on Bruce. The ending came when he delivered his Big Dump finisher to both guys at the same time. Afterwards, he brought out a table and laid out Fame on it and powerbombed Swyft onto the table? but it didn't break! Whoops.
Intermission time, which lasted around 20 minutes, due in part to the wrestlers coming out to sign autographs.
6. Jaison Moore defeated Craig Classic. This was a pretty good encounter. Early on Jaison did a somersault dive off the apron to a standing Craig on the floor, but mainly landed on the ground rather than Craig. Another whoops. Given that, it's not surprising to hear that when Craig was on offense, he targeted the back of Moore. At one point, Craig walked out of the match and headed to the back, only to introduce a garbage can into the match. I guess this was an anything goes bout, as the garbage can was then used by both guys with no DQ from the ref. The ending came when Classic had the garbage can over his head and Jaison did a double stomp of the top rope onto the can. Ouch.
7. Jerrelle Clark defeated Aaron Epic. I remember that this was a pretty good contest, although the main thing I can recall was how the referee was involved in a few spots for comedy and of course those spots ended up coming at Jerrelle's expense, including the ref "accidentally" DDT'ing Clark. Still, Jerrelle was able to get the win.
8. The Heartbreak Express (w/ Amy Vitale) and The Lifeguards fought to a double countout. This is the first time I've seen two of my favorite teams face off against each other so to state the obvious, I was excited to see this bout. Unlike how you typically see them, The Lifeguards were the good guys here, although the crowd seemed wary of cheering them on. Despite the audience, I thought it was a quite good contest, filled with the comedy you'd expect from the two teams. Wade ended up being the FIP (face in peril, not Full Impact Pro) and out of nowhere Daron entered the ring and then both teams ended up brawling all around the arena, ending the bout in a double countout. I was like, "Damn, I wanted to see more of the match" but after they brawled all over the Armory for a few minutes, using tables and steel chairs, I wasn't disappointed anymore. As usual, Sean Davis ended up bleeding, and as usual, he bled a lot. Wade and Daron said that they wanted an "Anything Goes Match" the next time they were in Avon Park, and that would be a bout I would love to see. They never announced when the next Avon Park show would be, but I presume it will be in a few months.
9. Jerrelle Clark defeated Jaison Moore to win the 2007 Florida J Cup. I'll say that this was a good finale, although for whatever reason the crowd wasn't really into the bout itself. I can't really say why, either. Jerelle controlled most of the bout, although by the end Moore got in some offense, including nailing the Kryptonite Krunch, but this time only for the 2 count. Clark won with The Teabag Driver. All the wrestlers then came out to congratulate Jerrelle as he was presented his trophy, and with prodding from Jaison, he shook Moore's hand.
Overall, this show, which was about 2 hours and 50 minutes, was a good time. I enjoyed it; it's just a shame they had those problems with the attendance. The thing is, some of the most memorable moments of the night happened ~after~ the show but I'm not at liberty to talk about it; I just wanted to say that I had fun last night. I probably will be at both MXPW's "Bruiserweight Tournament" in May in Boca Raton and their Lords of the Ring tag tournament in June in Pompano Beach, but I hope they get around to announcing guys for the tournament real soon; I'm curious as to who is in both tournaments, and I'd like to know before I make any potential hotel reservations for both nights.
My next two wrestling shows will be FIP's double shot in Inverness and Crystal River. Until then, Happy Easter, everyone.
